Hotmail account locked and 2 factor "not available at this time"

Main Post:

Hi there, my hotmail account ******@hotmail.com has been locked for over a week now.

I have tried to recover and reset my password but require 2 factor authentication.

Email authentication works on my other personal address @flett.com but Mobile phone authentication says "this service is unavailable right now".

When I run through the account recovery process and fill in all the details of people i have emailed etc, it sends me an email saying that this is impossible because I have 2 factor authentication enabled.\

This has been the case for a week. I have tried every day. Please can you help me unlock my account?

Thanks for any assistance.

Ali

Elementor Form after submit "email" not working but "email 2" works fine

Main Post:

Sorry if this was a confusing title but the problem is confusing. I've got an elementor form built on my site with after-submit actions "email" and "email 2" turned on. "Email" is supposed to send me an email telling me someone filled out the form and show me the fields. "Email 2" is supposed to send a confirmation to the sender.

The issue I'm facing is I am not receiving emails but the senders are. I tested the "to" field on "email 2" with multiple email addresses and all seem to work except for the email address I have as the recipient in "email". Why is it that only my email address will not receive emails from my form? They're not going into spam either. I've checked multiple times.

Again, sorry if this was a confusing post. Thanks in advance for your help.

I received an email about 2 step verification for my Google cloud. I have never used Google cloud!

Main Post:

Greetings everyone. So recently I received this email from Google Cloud. Checked everything and it's legit. ( From Google). So I headed back there and noticed this project. I can't remember when I created it though.( Not details available) I never had a pc or a laptop. Never used it. Why did this pop up here? Any answers? Any experts who can answer it? Possible because of using Google sheets? Also, does that mean even Google drive needs 2fa? What's included?

Top Comment: It is most likely that at some point you did something that triggered the creation of the account without even knowing it. The reason I got the email and apparently had an account is because a few years ago I tried out a macro in a google sheet to see if it would work for my use case. I didn't even end up using it but just adding it at any point resulted in a google cloud account. I think a lot of people unknowingly did something which triggered an account creation and got the email and were confused. The e-mail is also a bit confusing since most people have 2fa on their Google accounts so they'll just think they already have it enabled.

NUT with 2 UPS how to identify in email notifications

Main Post:

I have 2 UPS's. They are in separate rooms and each one on a different PI however on one PI, I set it up to monitor both which works

I also have this PI call a shell script which sends out an email for event notifications. Now my issue currently it will send out the same email no matter what UPS has an event. Presumably if I lost power, I will get 2 emails saying AC power lost

Is there a way when the shell script is called it can pass through a variable of which UPS its talking about? That way I will know oh UPS 2 has lost comms etc?

Thinking it would work inside upsmon.conf to just send a $1 variable to the shell script? But I can't seem to find any docs about variables

EDIT: Sorry I found it, $UPSNAME Environment variable! Happy now my setup is complete hope this post helps others

Oh will I have to setup email notifications on the second pi and I will have to monitor one UPS per PI?

Thanks

Top Comment: I'd probably run something like https://github.com/DRuggeri/nut_exporter pointed at the NUT interface, and then setup a free account with Grafana Cloud. Install the Grafana Agent on one of the ups-connected devices and point it at the exporter, and you should see all the data in Grafana so you can track trends etc. You can then use the alerting feature of Grafana Cloud to send you emails based on all kinds of measurements, not just power loss. I should point out that I'm not a Grafana employee, just someone who uses their setup on a daily basis precisely so I don't have to worry about any of this kind of stuff!

2 factor Authentication: Email vs Authentication App which one is better and more secure?

Main Post:

Helios guys,

These days cyber security is more of a concern and I have been looking at various services those provide MFA (Multi factor Authorization) and they give you the option of using either Email or Auth. apps like Microsoft authenticator, Google authenticator, Yubi etc. to authenticate your login to software or website. So, what do you think is better option users should go with and why? I tried to look in internet for this answer and did not found any.

Thanks for your time and answer.

Top Comment: Email is easier to compromise, especially if that doesn't have something like 2 factor to help protect it. Not that an app is uncrackable, but it is a smaller attack vector and would likely involve either theft of the device or targeted malware.

How many email addresses do I need?

Main Post:

I have considered creating more email addresses for myself to increase my privacy, but I don’t know how many I need. How many email addresses should one person have, and what should each one be used for? In which email addresses is it okay to include personal information, such as my first and last name? I want to avoid making any more than is strictly necessary because I am afraid I won’t be able to keep track of them all.

I have considered having separate email addresses for personal use, social media websites, work, government websites, online shopping (such as Amazon, eBay, or some alternative), banking, and others. Which services need their own email addresses? If there is some kind of rule that I can use to determine which services require their own address, I would like to know what it is.

Should I just stick with ProtonMail for all of my addresses? ProtonMail is what I am most comfortable with, privacy-wise. I hope ProtonMail doesn’t mind that I have several free accounts.

I would prefer not to use paid services, if possible.

Another thing I want to ask is regarding switching email addresses on accounts for online services. Do online services keep old email addresses stored even after you change the address that you tie to the account? It would give me peace of mind to know that services don’t keep your old email addresses stored after you change the ones your accounts use.

How many email accounts do you use?

Main Post:

Hi everyone.

I am trying to move away from Gmail and gain back some privacy in the email department. The thing is, I can't figure out how many accounts I should make. I thought I should compartmentalize my digital life by making separate accounts (or aliases) in the following way -

  • Shopping
  • Gaming
  • Social accounts
  • One for all the small accounts I don't care much for
  • One for my personal use

Currently, I have one Gmail account that goes like [email protected]. Even if I change my Amazon account email to a new one, or make a new one, sooner or later Amazon (or any other service) will be able to link my identity with my old account. What should be my goal if I choose to compartmentalize, since anonymity isn't achievable? How do you handle your email accounts, and do you have any tips to reach a higher level of privacy?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Top Comment:

Well personally I have about 17 different emails. Some for gaming, spam, work, personal, normal, friends, and many more. However some people feel like having that many emails makes things too difficult to manage and tend to stick with one or two. It’s all about how good you are at management and a balance between everything you need a email for and the amount you can handle. Note-17 is too many for most people.

Digital decluttering - How many emails do you have?

Main Post:

I currently have too many emails, it is cluttering up my mind and computer. I have a social media email, personal, work, friends, untrusted sites, shopping, my university email, and some old emails I still have to get rid of for personal, professional, that I've had for many years.

Is it really safe to only have one for personal, one for work? I want to be secure and private, however I don't want to have to open 5-10 different email accounts every morning. Its just a mess. I am also struggling because I want a professional gmail address, but nothing decent for an address is still available, so I'm stuck with outlook for work. I would have probably chosen one prof. gmail, one personal gmail, and used those for everything. I also don't trust facebook, that's why I created a social media email solely for that purpose. Its mostly just that I don't want to be easily found on social media, by certain people. I guess you could call me a little paranoid.

Help me out reddit! I need to declutter my pile of mailboxes, but also remain good security wise. How many emails should I have?

Top Comment:

If you really want to be professional, get a domain name and use that email. Gmail is not professional, it is personal. Domains names, whether personal brand or company brand, are professional. Also with a domain, you can create multiple emails, ie. hello@, contact@, name@ etc.
As far as decluttering what you currently have, you can get a free Doculife account as they have an awesome import email feature that lets you forward email attachments right into their system which is in the cloud. And they have an app. So its as simple as forwarding the important stuff for safe keeping. Search by your known contacts, ie friends & family, and delete the rest.

How many email addresses do I need realistically for better security and privacy?

Main Post:

I have heard that having multiple email addresses is good to avoid spam messages, and enjoy better security and privacy. Currently, I use temporary 10 min emails. Ideally, how many should I create? How many do y'all use? Should I just go with proton mail or Gmail?

Top Comment: Personally, I've been doing just fine by having EVERYTHING under one roof. Proton is the email service I use, and I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone and everyone who wants to get serious about taking back control of their privacy & security. Now, I'm mainly able to have everything under one roof because I trust Proton enough to pay them my hard-earn cash monthly for a subscription where I get 500GB of encrypted cloud storage, 15 email addresses, 3 domain addresses, a VPN, and many more features that make Proton so much more efficient than Gmail ever could be for just $12 a month. I have 4 email addresses I host under Proton—my personal address I give to close friends & family, my banking, my business, and a misc. address for websites, newsletters, and accounts I log in to that isn't all too important to be under the other addresses. Now, I don't give out ANY of the actual addresses to the services I sign up with. I strongly recommend using SimpleLogin to create aliases that mask your actual email addresses. Best of all, if you log into SimpleLogin with your Proton account if you have the paid version, SimpleLogin will also be premium. It's a win-win, honestly. I know this is a bit long, but I hope this helped in some way! 😅

I get multiple emails every day stating I’ve requested a single use code for my account. Why?! Is someone trying to hack into my emails? The email address seems legit and there’s no link to click and provide details in the email

It's called MFA fatigue attack. They keep trying until you give in. At some point you'll get a link or a phone call. Many people get tired of this and give in. It works. If you do, assume full compromise.
